About the Role

The SCNTR is seeking a driven, empathetic, and organized individual to be its first Violence Intervention Director, to steward SCNTR’s violence intervention services. This is a secured three-year funded position. It is the intention of SCNTR to sustain the program after the third year. The Director is a member of SCNTR’s leadership team and will report directly to the Executive Director and maintain a close working relationship with the Program Consultant and Program Evaluator. This position will supervise the Victim Service Manager and the Street Outreach Service Manager. The current budgeted staffing for the program is for six members (two service managers, three Nonviolence Street Outreach Workers “NSOWs”, and the Director) although funding is being sought to expand the team by at least eight, including an Employment/Education Specialist.
The Director will oversee the 24/7 day to day operations of the program, which includes an On-Call schedule for program staff (the Director is expected to be On-Call). The Director adheres to strict protocols and policies. Long nights and weekends are not uncommon, as violence routinely occurs outside of “normal” business hours. The Director needs to have the skills to operate in many different settings and be able to build trusting relationships with law enforcement, elected officials, healthcare providers, community organizations and residents, as well as individuals that may be susceptible to violence or have been a victim of violence and operate in sensitive settings. The ideal candidate
will have experience with supervising a diverse team, preparing quality and timely reports including grant reporting, understanding complex data, be able to speak in professional settings, have knowledge of the groups and individuals engaged in violence in Selma and Selmont. Professional skill sets, and various knowledge on violence intervention practices or community building principles are also important.
All SCNTR staff members are trained in MLK’s Nonviolence Theory and Beloved Healthy Community Framework. It is the expectation that all SCNTR staff members are consistently studying and practicing living a nonviolent lifestyle. Responsibilities:
● Provide leadership and management to the program and to SCNTR. Be a productive, flexible, proactive and encouraging member of SCNTR’s leadership team.
● Build partnerships with community organizations, police departments, school departments, and community leaders across Selma and Selmont with a particular attention to the program’s focus areas.
● Supervise Street Outreach and Victim Services Manager with goal to develop intervention service teams to develop more effective identification and interventions for victims of violent crime and those susceptible to violence within the focus areas
● Produce timely reports to funders including the DOJ, CAB, foundations, program stakeholders
● Convene and staff the program’s Community Advisory Board (CAB). CAB is comprised of community and city stakeholders that identifies and addresses service barriers and gaps in addressing community violence
● Partner with the Program Evaluator to identify data strengths, gaps, and needs from existing state and
municipal data sources, community and agency data sources, and research literature
● Assist in drafting and editing written material including, but not limited to, background memos, fact-sheets, press releases, policy briefs and position papers
● Work collaboratively with other SCNTR staff to help develop and manage dynamic content for website,
e-newsletter and social media
● Plan and execute a system of assessment and evaluation for program, under the guidelines of the SCNTR’s Logic Model and implementation plan and in collaboration with other SCNTR programs
● Ensure that grant compliance and reporting requirements are met, as well as applicable state laws and policies
● In conjunction with senior management, develop the program budget, participate in strategic planning,
including grant writing and fundraising as needed, for the future growth of the program
● Engage in other duties as a member of the Center’s Leadership Team
● Represent SCNTR at all program meetings and events along with program staff as required
● Represent SCNTR in the absence of the Executive Director at meetings and events as required
● Maintain a nonviolent lifestyle by embracing the philosophy with an expectation of participating in
nonviolence trainings when needed
● Maintain high quality communication with management of SCNTR
● Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • An understanding of the structural and sociological factors of community violence

  • Experience coordinating across referral partners, service providers, and public agencies

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, positive and effective working relationships with staff, community partners, and state and city and community leaders with diplomacy and foster a spirit of collaboration

  • A commitment to center the voices of individuals engaged in violence throughout implementation

  • An understanding of the data analysis necessary for programmatic impact evaluation

  • Ability to plan, budget, supervise, motivate and develop staff

  • Superior organizational and communication abilities

  • An ability to manage several programs simultaneously

  • Willingness to work in fast-paced environment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office & Google Suite products and knowledge of CRMs Databases

For decades, cities with high rates of crime and violence have engaged in many strategies and projects to mediate conflicts, gather information, understand and intervene in violence, help foster peace, reconnect those who have been incarcerated to positive lifestyles, including educational and employment opportunities and ultimately prevent future violence in neighborhoods.

The Beloved Healthy Community framework currently has success in cities and neighborhoods across the country integrating components of a holistic approach to reducing violence. At its core is Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation, the successful theory developed and implemented by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This framework looks at what are considered to be four major components to having a healthy community, noted below, and strives to strengthen those components on three levels: self, clients, and community.

The Selma Community Based Crime Reduction program (CBCR), a federally funded three-year project through the DOJ, will be implemented in the City of Selma in Dallas County, Alabama, an area of 13.8 square miles with a population just under 20,000; for the purposes of this program, this will include the unincorporated areas of Selmont and Craig Air Field (or “the Base”), together referred to throughout this description as “the Selma Metro Area”.
